You're right, it isn't the best way (or motivation) to approach God. Still, it's a reality that cannot be argued away, and because it is so terrible people should be warned about it, I think. Even if only so that they won't be able to say one day that no-one told them about it...

The problem with it is that sinister and shallow human characters can use and often used people's fear of Hell to manipulate them.
Its also a perfect tool of Mind controll in the wrong hands.
Remember what Cathaolics did in the Middle Ages when people could buy relief from Hell by paying an appropriate sum.
This is certainly not what God wants or what would people save from Hell

Well... sure, but when it comes to hell... or heaven, for that matter.. it is between you and God. It is a very personal and private matter, in the end. Other people can warn about hell, but they cannot stand in the gap on your behalf before God. Every one of us have to work out our own salvation, as the Bible says... "with fear and trembling".
Philippians 2:12
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
