Most speakers are Polish speakers, but Zapadno is closer to Proto-Slavic I'd guess, as in East as in South Slavic languages it's also zapad and not zachod. As it's the name of a country, a proper name, I guess Poles would be fine with making that concession in name.

Yes. In common West-Slavic, rumour has it, the word for West was Zachód until it got associated with piggish Western tourists who have the weirdest and most perverse fetishes (Germans). Then it came to mean 'toilet' with speakers of the Czecho-Slovakian branch and they introduced 'Zapad' from other Slavic languages to denote 'West'.

Just a hypothesis, but we might be unto something there.
