It is dangerous if you are a politician, you can be killed for talking too much. The politicians here are corrupt and there are several cases of deaths by talking too much.
And in cities, violence is a matter of luck. My father had his car stolen, but I never suffered it.

If you mean low-state level politicians, it is true. I knew several who were killed. But the big corrupt politicians are rarely killed in Brazil, which is a shame.

Sure, but it usually happens after a kidnapping. Not openly on the streets. Shooting innocent people on the streets does happen though. But decapitation is still not an open activity in Brazil.

You can never be careful enough there. It's almost all about luck in Brazil.

Not standing out helps. Dressing very casually like wearing a t-shirt with shorts or so. One Surinamese once told me he used to live in neighbouring Brazil (forgot to ask where in Brazil). He also added: 'yes, the violence is real and Cidade de Deus isn't that exaggerated at all for certain neighbourhood, it's a hell'. I asked him how he dealt with it and his response: 'well, I'm black, people are less prone picking a fight with me'.

And he had a point I think. People tend to perceive black people as more assertive and able to defend themselves (even helps for gun violence).

This also means, that being a white tourist in Brazil makes you stand out no matter how you dress (but it's still wise to wear cheap clothes regardless).
