There's a drastic difference in rural and urban defacation. Its barely above 10% in urban areas whereas in rural areas it goes to around 75% in some states. Sucks though cause about 2/3 of indians live in rural areas. Thats why that figure is so high. A lot of it is religious since building a toilet in a household where they worship statues/idols is considered unsanitary and unholy. This is more common in central/north-central india. In the northwest, northeast, and southern india its relatively lower. People are not as strict with religion in those areas and a lot of those regions are urbanized. Plus there are a lot of open areas/fields in villages so its not a problem for general public in rural areas. There are no 'designated shitting streets' wtf?? The image above is obviously a joke. People do it in private in different areas if they do end up pooping outside.
