    Default Janjevci (Croats from Kosovo)

The Janjevci declare as ethnic Croats, and derive their ethnonym (Janjevci) from their traditional community centre, in Janjevo. It is believed that the community descends from migrating merchants from the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik and its hinterland) who settled the area in the 14th century, when modern-day Kosovo was part of medieval Serbia. The first written mention of Catholics in Janjevo is a letter written by Pope Benedict XI in 1303, mentioning Janjevo as the center of the Catholic parish of St. Nicholas. Together with the Saxons from Central Europe, they worked the Serbian mines.

They have maintained their Catholic faith until today. The community speaks the Prizren-South Morava sub-dialect of the Shtokavian dialect.

Very intresting people. They like to call themselves as first Croatian diaspora.

However not all of their origins seem to be from Ragusa. Its kinda complicated and in some cases simillar to situation of Bosniaks in Sandzak as many seem to have have Albanian origins.
We can see this from some of their last names such as Gašić,Berišić,Mazrekić,Paljić, Iljini, Andređini... Even some slavic surnames as Rodići say that their ancestors spoke Albanian untill 20th century. The oldest catholic village from Janjevo was called Arbanas so it aslo suggest some Albanian ethnos.

There is aslo theories that some of them are descendats of Saxons who came to work as miners in medieval Serbia. This is probably true as we know that after Great Turkish war most of other Catholic enclaves in Kosovo migrated towards Janjevo and it kinda became stronghold for Catholicism in Kosovo. Surely some of those people who came could have been Saxons.

They are were merchant society so it doesnt surprise me that they are very mixed, and it would be interstering if we had some results of their Y-dna.

I think it's sad what happened to this community as in 30 years it won't exist anymore.

Nope. They'll be pure thanks to being surrounded by Muslim Albanians and Orthodox Serbs.

    Catholics there marry Catholics.

In Kosovo there is only around 300 Janjevci left, and it's almost all old people. Rest migrated to Dalmatia in lands Serbs used to live before Oluja and they will eventually be completely absorbed into other Croats.

Nah man as I said there is very little of them in Kosovo after Yugowars majority came to live in Croatia in houses of expelled Serbs.

Janjevci seem to dislike both Serbs and Albanians, i thought that maybe they would be friendly with Albos but seems everyone dislikes everyone in Kosovo.
