Where is her Polish German from?

Is surname the only reason why you assume she was German?

That says nothing about overall ethnicity, lots of Polish people have surnames of German origin.

Hoffmann is a common surname in my region (Wielkopolska).

As for German surnames in Poland, check for example my thread about the Posener Aufstand (uprising of Polish people against Prussian rule in Provinz Posen of the German Empire in 1918-19) in the link below:

Around 10% of Polish insurgents had German surnames:

You can't accuse them of being German if they were Polish patriots fighting against German rule.

Some of the surnames are unaltered German, others are Polonized German.

Note also the prevalence of typically Polish given names.

How common are Polish surnames in Belarus? Is there an easy way to distinguish them? Marcinkiewicz - they guy you recommended me to contact - has a Polish surname? Or is it Belarusian?

I'm not accusing anyone of anything, lol. However, Bertha Hoffman doesn't sound Polish to me at all.

Yeah, given name (Bertha) is a better indicator.

Was she a German from Congress Poland?

Honestly I think -wicz is mostly Eastern (east of Warsaw) originally. I have this ending myself.

So it is Mazovian? Mazovians are still Polish, even though genetically Baltic-shifted. It does not sound Belarusian to me but maybe there are some surnames that are both Polish and Belarusian.

This guy - nicks olszak and olszak-przytycki - is researching the origin of surnames in Poland:

    https://genealodzy.pl/PNphpBB2-viewt...459aa81c.phtml

But I have doubts about reliability (he is an amateur and his methodology is not clear to me).

He is mostly on forum gazeta.pl and forum genealodzy.pl I think.

This website ("Stankiewicze & friends" Genealogy) is more reliable:

About Marcinkiewicz (name found in Poland since the 13th century):

    http://www.stankiewicze.com/index.php?kat=44&sub=812

"Marcinkiewicz - w grupie nazwisk pochodzących od imienia Marcin. Imię pochodzi od łacińskiego Martinus i oznaczało pierwotnie ‘należący do boga wojny Marsa’. W Polsce notowane od XIII wieku. Obok formy Macin spotyka się w średniowieczu Mercin, Morcin, Martyn."
