Are Chinese strong no ? the answer is no. They were pretty weak being conquered by Mongols, Manchus, Tibetan, Jurchen, Khitan, Xianbei, Japanese, Burmese tribes and by European empires in 18th-19th century century ( of course with Europeans one could argue because European had guns while Chinese had knifes and swords ). The Chinese never had a impressive land expansive empire and in history 500,000 ming soldiers were destroyed by 20,000 Mongol oirat soldiers and Tang dynasty invasion of Korea with million Chinese soldiers (+ many Turkic soldiers ) lost against Koreans.
Even in the Tang dynasty, they relied mostly Turkic soldiers to help their expansion in western and central asia.
