I like a lot Romanian castles, they have that stereotypical look described in the gothic literature of XIXth century.

I think that it dates back to the Norman conquest, they had to control a vast territory, and since they were relatively few and surrounded by an hostile population, they had to build castles everywhere to guard the territory.
