Yeah, I've always dreamed of becoming such a powerful person in Chicago that I could get rid of the law and the "Protectors of the Park" or whatever they're called and just open up the damn place for business. Oddly, Chicago was specifically designed to not be socialist. Early plans for the city, that would have made it more European, were rejected because they were too European and ostensibly socialist. But the lakefront was always part of the plan, and activists do everything they can to keep it useless. They have one "cafe" (seen in one of KMack's photos) at Oak St beach (actually where I live), but it's only open on certain days of the summer, "weather permitting", so when it is open, just like any bar in Chicago, it's so crowded with disgusting tourists that it's as useless as not being there at all.

It's really depressing.

Actually ? "European" and "Socialism" should not be conflated. American 'soycialism" is ridiculous as here in Europe there are plenty of small businesses in and around parks.

Oh I know, I know! It was quite embarrassingly stupid, especially since the actual outcome had quite the opposite effect.

I think it had to do with fancy parks being for rich people who lived along the lakefront, keeping the nasties and uglies and working classes away by not having bars and places for them to go.

I really think that that's what makes Chicago such a horrible place to be. It is illegal to have 'businesses' or anything near the lakefront. It's just a park. So, when you're in the city, you have almost no idea that the Lake is there-- you can't see it. When you go to it, you're in the park, and if you have to go pee or want a coffee or need lunch, you have to work your way back into the city, which takes like 20 minutes. It's ridiculous. If we had cafes and bars and restaurants on the lake, we'd be like the goddamned Riviera.

I'm not quite sure I understand why you would say that. Are you referring to the one or two ostensible "cafes" that are open on specific days of the summer during specific hours, weather permitting? There are 23 miles of lakefront. Why would you say such a thing?

1930s:

Extremely interesting long film about New York towards the end of the Great Depression. This film is in colour, motion-stabilized, enhanced and speed-corrected by me. Duration: nearly 42 minutes. Press the 'SHOW MORE' button for far more info! The film shows many images of New York's buildings (Empire State, Chrysler and Woolworth buildings a.o), Bridges, Aircraft, Neon lights and Steamships. Especially the footage of the famous ocean liners RMS Queen Mary, which was brand new at that time, and the SS Normandie and SS Conte di Savoia footage (in color!) is intriguing. The film was probably made by a wealthy family involving an elderly lady who appears half a dozen times in the film. Maybe they booked the famous SS Normandie cruise to Rio in Feb.1938 or Feb.1939. Please note that the film has NOT been artificially colourized; it is original Kodak (?) color film. Do take a look at the other material on my channel. Update: after reading all the comments, the concensus seems to be that most, if not all of this film was shot around the Christmas period of 1937.
