Here is a new series I have started called 'Engines of Amtrak' where I look into the history of Amtrak's motive power and give each locomotive it's own edition of detailed statistics, purpose for building, background information and the locomotive's lifespan from start to finish. Today we look into the EMD SDP40F, the first new locomotive acquired by Amtrak infamously known for being accident prone. From 1973 to 1974, 150 of these locomotives were built for long distance service to replace aging E8 and E9s to which some were nearly 25 years old. What else is there to learn about the SDP40F? Well that's up to you to find out. If there are any errors in data or information, please feel free to correct any mistakes. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

This episode has been in really high demand so here it is. Today we look at the French and American-built Turboliner trainsets that were built for higher speed intercity service in the Midwest and later the northeastern United States. Spanning a running life of 3 decades, they proved successful in the 1970s-1990s with plans to renovate and revamp the Turboliner for high speed mainline service in the early 2000s on the Amtrak Empire Corridor. That was, until a lawsuit and an A/C problem eventually brought the Turboliner's life to an unexpected end. If there are any errors in data or information, please feel free to correct any mistakes. Hope you enjoy, stay tuned for the next episode where I will look into General Electric's E60. Thanks for watching!

The highly anticipated GE E60 edition of Engines of Amtrak is finally here! Today I discuss the General Electric E60, the first new electric locomotive built post-Amtrak era in the United States. The E60 originated out of Arizona on an isolated coal hauling railroad known as the Black Mesa & Lake Powell (BM&LP) and the locomotive eventually made it's way to Amtrak for passenger service. However, while expectations were high for the E60 with thoughts it would easily replace the aging GG1 and mechanically-unreliable Metroliner EMU's, the Amtrak E60 didn't fair well in practice due to their six axle freight styled trucks and led to consistent problems. Learn more about the history of the E60 in this video and how it came to be part of Amtrak's history book! Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching, and stay tuned for the Metroliner video. It may be delayed for sometime as summer is ending for me in a couple weeks and school will be back once again. I hope you guys can understand and please be patient waiting for the Metroliner video. I don't devote all my time to this series as I have said before. I have other videos to work on and other personal things to do as well.

Also credit to mafarnz for the S55 airhorn recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8yVH... Here is another edition of Engines of Amtrak. The Budd Metroliner. We have a unique EMU with a good amount of history and one long lasting life span all the way up to present day. The Metroliner originated out of a mechanically failed design known as the Pioneer III and had a bumpy start with multiple problems due to the Westinghouse powered traction motors, insufficient transformer, and bouncing pantographs. On the other hand, the General Electric traction motor equipped Metroliners had a smoother run. The Metroliners proved to be very versatile and were a general success with a career stretching into the 1980s. Unfortunately, the Metroliners age had caught up to them by that point and became incredibly unreliable. However, Amtrak rebuilt numerous Metroliner EMUs into cab cars for push pull and shuttle service and many former Metroliner EMU's survive today roaming the rails as cab cars. But that's only a fraction of the information contained in this video. Find out more information about the Budd Metroliners in this edition of Engines of Amtrak. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

On this edition of Engines of Amtrak I discuss General Electric's P30CH locomotive. GE wanted to appeal to the still young Amtrak and compete with EMD in terms of horsepower and locomotive sales. The P30CH had roots dating back to 1959 with the first locomotive being produced in GE's Universal series, also nicknamed "U-Boats". The U-Boats and the P30CH thus share a slight evolutionary family resemblance. In 1975, GE sought to utilize their successful U30C as a base for their new passenger locomotive. It would essentially be a U30C but with a carbody design and equipped for passenger duties. However, in the end, this was just another flop for Amtrak and GE.

The Hoosac Tunnel through the range of the Hoosac Range (Western Massachusetts):

On Saturday October 24, 2015, I was given the rare opportunity to ride through the Hoosac Tunnel via Amtrak's Autumn Express. Amtrak was very kind to me and allowed me to ride on the back deck of the VIP car to shoot while going through the tunnel! This gives us what is probably the best Hoosac Tunnel footage to date. Please enjoy the footage and the banter I had with the 2 relief engineers! Key elements: 00:33 - Enter the West Portal 02:22 - End of brick works (There are other segments of brick through the tunnel. This is where the main tube ends.) 04:47 - West Signal Light 10:42 - Central Shaft Bore (1 of 2 Large dark "void" on right. There are two of these, one on either side, which bore in and twist up to the central shaft) 10:42 - Beginning of Central Shaft Brick Arch 10:46 - Hoosac Hotel (On right - Marked by old catenary pole sticking out from wall) 10:48 - Central Shaft Bore (2 of 2 - Large dark "void" on left.) 16:58 - East Signal Light 19:49 - Exit the East Portal If you spot other things which should be noted, please comment below!

In the northernmost reaches of the United States, there is a train tunnel whose very foundations are saturated with the blood of the many workers who died hollowing it out. Disturbing encounters with spectral entities were reported both during its construction and for many years afterwards. What secrets lie at the heart of the Hoosac Tunnel hauntings?

Default In the past, California and Florida were known for their citrus fruits - particularly orange:

Did you know orange juice wasn't a nationally consumed beverage until the mid 1900's? It feels like the ubiquitous drink of breakfasts all around the country, and yet, it's production and consumption has been on the decline for the past few years. What rocketed orange juice to being one of the most popular drinks in America? And why have we fallen out of love with it? Cheddar explains. While people generally know the nicknames for cities, the origin of those nicknames is not so well known. The History Guy uncovers the surprising history behind the nicknames for three of America's great cities: Washington D.C., New York and Chicago. This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.
