Persia is an Anglicization of the Greek name for Persia, but Persia is not the same as Iran. Persia is a subregion of Iran and its native name is Fars. Persia and Iran are distinct entities so it makes sense for them to have different names in English. Calling Kurdistan or [South] Azerbaijan "Persia" makes no sense. As stated earlier, Persia may be an older name in English but using Iran is much more sensible. Also, the English demonym ("Iranian") for someone from Iran is different to the native one ("Irani"). English can still use English names for Iran's subregions without controversy. A few off the top of my head are Carmania (Kerman), Susiana (Khuzestan), and Persia (Fars). When discussing Iranian history, the English names that I mentioned are always used. The Anglo-Greek Media is also used instead of the native Mada as well as the Anglo-Greek Atropatene as opposed to the native Atropatakan. The difference between Iran and Persia is that they have different meanings. They aren't comparable to the other examples that you gave which are just altered spellings based on the native pronunciation of the name.

Except it's not a mistake, anymore than Arabs calling Greece "Yunanistan" (after Ionia, which isn't even in Greece anymore) or Finns calling Germany "Saksa" (after Saxony) is.
