Presentation of Canada's history and contribution to Western defense and the Atlantic Community. "Introducing Canada" is part of a series originally designed as "Know your Allies", and finally titled "the Atlantic Community Series". Its objectives were to familiarize public opinion in each of the member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasize the national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and allied defense in the framework of NATO. The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV. Language versions were made and distributed with the help of the national governments. “My country and NATO” tells the story of each one of NATO’s members, using a selection of unique archival materials to take you back in time. Présentation de l'histoire du Canada et de la contribution du pays à la défense occidentale et à la communauté atlantique. Le court métrage « Images du Canada » fait partie d’une série initialement intitulée « Know your Allies », puis rebaptisée « The Atlantic Community Series ». L’objectif de cette série était d’aider le public de chacun des pays de l’Alliance à se familiariser avec les autres pays membres, ainsi que de mettre en lumière les contributions des différents pays aux traditions politiques et culturelles occidentales, à la reconstruction économique et à la défense des Alliés dans le cadre de l’OTAN. Produits entre 1954 et 1956 en coopération avec le Service d'information de l'OTAN, ces courts métrages ont été financés par les pouvoirs publics des États-Unis dans le cadre du plan Marshall et ont été distribués par l’OTAN. Ils ont été largement diffusés, parfois même au cinéma et à la télévision. Certains ont été traduits et distribués avec l’aide des pays concernés. As requested in our poll a few days ago, here we have some more Icelandic saga for you! Though not supposedly the first European to see America (that honour goes to Bjarni Herjólfsson), Leif Erikson is credited with being the first to make landfall on the American continent. As the saga tells it, Leif first sighted 'Vinland' (as it was later named after its supposed abundance of grapes) after being blown off course en route to spread Christianity to Greenland on behalf of Olaf Trigvasson. Located in modern day Newfoundland in Canada, a number of Viking age settlements have been dug up in that area - including a ship repair station - dated to a good five hundred years before the arrival of Columbus.
