    Default My Ancestry DNA results

I have just received my Ancestry DNA results in and for the most part they are as expected. I know from my paper trail that I am pretty much 100% Scottish and Irish, with at least half of that being from Connemara on my mum's side but also some Irish from Donegal and Meath on my Dads side as well as some Northern Irish protestant thrown in too.

My Scottish ancestry is basically from all over Scotland but with most of it being from West and central Scotland as well as a bit from the Borders.

Only thing I'm surprised about is the 0% Great Britain and the 9% Europe West. It says my Europe West is connected to Scotland, so I'm wondering what it represents in a Scottish context? I wonder if it is linked to my Border ancestry or Northern Irish and if it could possibly change to England/Wales if my results are ever updated.

Sometimes I wonder why I shell out money to find out how boring my ancestry is And not even the new update either!

I have only been classified once before years ago, I can recall being told I was "West Atlantid" and someone else said I was "coarse mediterranid" whatever the hell that is. I am fairly dark haired and eyed though and often get asked if i'm Portuguese/Spanish/Italian ect

That’s super interesting that people think you’re Iberian or Italian

Ancestry seems to be the best going of the companies. Doubt I will pay for it, but interesting to see your results confirm.

They dont have a "broadly" this or that category but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. What helped form this opinion of ADNA for you Graham?
Nine out of ten concerns are completely unfounded.

It could change to English and Welsh. Before the update I got only 11% British, and 30% Europe West, 39% Ireland/Scotland/Wales, and 12% Scandinavia.

After the update I get 64% England and Wales, 33% Ireland and Scotland, and 3% Norway. No other noise.

Wow, that's quite a change! the DNA companies seem to have real difficulty differentiating English from other West Euros.

which of your Ancestry DNA results would you say are more accurate?

I think in my case that I'm going to assume that most if not all of the 9% West Euro probably is Great Britain as it would make sense from what I already know about my ancestry.

Ancestry says that my West Euro is linked to Scotland, which makes me suspect it probably represents the more Anglo-Saxon/Germanic element that exists in both South East Scotland and England.

It's interesting that all the DNA companies give me about 90% British isles/Scots/Irish but they have trouble identifying the last 10% Myheritage says it's Baltic, FTDNA says it's Scandanavian and now Ancestry says it's West Euro.

The new results are pretty spot on for me. I am about 1/3 Irish/Scottish and 2/3 English/Welsh on paper. Not sure where the Norwegian fits in. My English is from south-east England (I get this as a genetic community with ancestry too), so I think I probably have Anglo-Saxon etc genes that were initially hard to separate from general Western Europe. I get a dot for The Netherlands on 23andme.

That 10% of yours does vary quite a bit. I’d probably trust myheritage the least. Scandinavian and west euro would be quite close. As you say, could be the more Viking or Anglo-Saxon element that’s affected Ireland and Scotland.

Interesting , I had a friend of Scottish heritage he had that presentation, his Dad was slightly swarthy a bit Sean Connery ish look, but my friend was even swarthier and some people assumed he had some med type background.
