Dogs really ARE man's best friend: Puppies as young as two-months old naturally trust humans 'like they are their own mother' even if they are strangers

Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, say dogs have evolved to trust their human allies like a member of their own species.



Puppies look to their human chums for an injection of confidence when facing a scary situation.

A study found that two-month-old dogs take emotional cues from their mothers as well as nearby people to figure out whether they should fear a new object.

The results show that despite being separate species, puppies intuitively trust human companions like one of their own, scientists said.

This is likely thanks to thousands of years of domestication leading our dogs to treat us like a member of their own pack.

Dogs evolved and developed in an environment that is complex and in many cases involved two species: Humans and other dogs.

'It is advantageous for them to rely on information about the world around them provided by both dogs and people – two sources are better than one.'
