To get back to the original post, I think Bill Murray's character in the 1982 movie Stripes sums it up best:
"We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world."
The US is the result of all of the worst people from the rest of the world--people who couldn't make it in their own country, for whatever reason--
The US was highly successful only following WW2, when the rest of the world was decimated and we were flooded with educated European Jews and ex-Nazi scientists. Naturally, that only lasted a few decades.
