    Italy

    Italia Turrita

turrita comes from "torre"(tower) because the italian peninsula is also known as the land of the cities. (rember the city states of the renaissance)

another symbol: the emblem of the Italian Republic

The red star occupies the central position in the Italian Coat of arms.
The Star represents the “Hesperus /ˈhɛspərʊs/” star, which is the name ancient greeks gave to planet Venus, which in the evening and reddish sunset sky could be seen shining towards the west.
later the star was generally associated with the concept of west, and, from a greek geographical perspective, with the Italic lands ( which in greek eyes represented “the west”).
“Hesperia”meaning “ the land of the star of Venus” was basically the first name ever given to the area we now recognise as the Italian Peninsula.
The star sits iabove a a Cogwheel (in italian “Ruota dentata”) and that’s a reference to the first Article of the italian constitution.
The first part of the first article states that Italy “…is a democratic Republic founded on labour. “
So you can see how the coat of arms with the star(Italy/hesperia) sitting above the cogwheel(labour) was designed to represent that first article.
Of course Communists politicians in the immediate afterwar wanted the first article to state that “Italy was a democratic Republic founded on workers(rather than on work/labour) ,but this was deemed a bit too “proletarian” and rejected.[/I]
