because if hindi becomes the national language, then others, especially tamils, start riots like why cant their language be the national language? Why does hindi get the importance? English is foreign and most had a british based school system post independence so thats why indians have no problem using it. If one of the indian languages becomes dominant, the people from different linguistic group would cause issues out of jealousy and aim for similar status. Tamils literally question why cant north indians learn tamil? why should we learn their language? they are that overly prideful about their culture and language, I'm not shitting you.

Its also spoken as a lingua franca [unfortunately] in Pakistan and a lot of (most?) Nepalis and Bangladeshis can also speak it. Sri Lanka is the only place in South Asia where its pretty much non-existent. I would say that puts it on par with Chinese. Arabic is spread over a greater geographic area but less people speak it than those that speak Hindi. In the Anglosphere, the foreign languages that are most prestigious would be probably be German, French, Spanish, and maybe Italian & Russian. And Japanese too cause of the weeaboos.

Hindi is non existent outside south asia though. Those countries speak hindi/urdu due to similarities and shared history rather than global importance. A lot of expats, students, etc from all around the world go to china to live, work, study, etc and chinese is literally required if you stay there long term so I would say chinese is definitely quite prestigious on a global scale given that its the second largest economy and a bunch of foreigners visit and live there. Arabic speakers are less but islam is spread throughout Asia and Africa and many expats from around the world work in the middle east as well so many foreigners have started learning arabic too if im not wrong.. Also yeah those euro languages are important either way and japanese is big due to similar reasons as chinese but yeah additionally due to anime, manga, etc.
