Just Curious. What surnames are given to abandoned infants in you country? what do they mean?

i think every country has surnames that are given to infants that were abandoned by the parents.
some may designate the fact other i think would probably be wishing luck to the child, what are those surname like in your country?

I have not idea. But I have heard about waif boy, who received a lastname NEŠPOR, because he was found in the time of VESPERS (in Czech NEŠPORY), but it was in 1930s-1940s.
Recently I have heard about baby found at babybox, who received lastname NEDĚLE (Sunday).

sometimes there's not even a standardization for such cases but that's the beauty of it i think.

nowadays i think it's very rare for authorities to find a baby in the middle of nowhere and to let it grow up somewhere. Adoptions have solved this problem luckily , but in ancient times even if the found baby had to become monk or sister because some religious order found him i think they had to give him a legal surname meanwhile. some italian ones are pretty fantasious haha

In Italy there are loads of those kinds of surnames, especially if you consider that some were more used than others in certain pre-unitary states.

most are a sort of Wish for good luck for the baby.

-Bonaventura (good luck in ancient italian)
-Bonaiuti (good help from god)
- Boncompagni (may you have a good friend )

others were adjectives or indicated the nature of the abandonment

-Bonfioli (good son)

-Bonfante (good son but with latin influence : bonus infans)

-Esposito( literally "exposed" meaning abandoned in front of a monastery or Church hoping the baby would have been rescued)

-Proietti (same as the one before)

-Trovatelli (Literally Found+small suffix)

a typical Tuscan surname for Abandoned child is Innocenti because of those child left on the outside of a Hospital named "ospedale degli innocenti"

In Spain it was either Iglesias (church) or Cruz (cross).
