Why do Europeans smoke so many cigarettes?

In some countries there isn't as much social stigma or governmental taxation of tobacco products, that might be two factors. Tobacco consumption in Europe has been decreasing substantially nonetheless.

It's not that common here. We have snus instead, that you put under your lip. Smoking is more a continental European thing.

Guessing/hoping Europeans smoke less than before? Never even considered to start smoking. Never liked the smell.

In our country we had several anti-smoking campaignes. But our nation is campaign-resistent, because of the historical reasons.

I visited numerous countries and cities in Europe recently and I noticed there was a huge amount of people smoking cigarettes. I even saw cigarette vending machines, which I haven't seen in a long time.

Why is this ?

Europeans even mix their cannabis with tobacco. They almost never smoke cannabis alone. When I was in Germany 10 years ago, they had double distilled wheat vodka (Doppelkorn) in the candy aisle next to the checkout counter, but when I asked for a pack of Gaulois cigarettes, the lady had to go get a special key from a backroom. Unbelievable.

I enjoyed their little metal tins of snuff tobacco. I wish they had those here in the US.

Chinese are worse.

This is true. I went to Chinatown in Boston on Sundays for an informal beginning Chinese class, and you have never seen such a bunch of cigarette smoking people in your life.

Here in the US we really push for no smoking. Ads, laws, extra taxes etc. And at least where I live, it tends to be working. I really don't see many people smoking anymore. However, I do see a lot of vaping which is gay as hell.

I figured with Europeans tending to be overall more healthy than Americans, that they would cut back on the smoking as well.
