That photograph was taken in April, 1865, not long after Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Under the terms of surrender, his men returned to their homes, and Lee checked in at Richmond, Virginia, where the pictured was taken.
He was a great leader, with a style of leadership that resembled that of George Washington. His soldiers called him Uncle Bobby.

He didnt care for slavery he only cared for his home state that is why he fought for the confederacy. He is neither, he was just a good leader.
Im indifferent since I had family I can directly trace that actively fought for the north and also the south.
