If you were locked up in a federal prison with some of America's meanest, any Mexican cholo friend who you befriended a year earlier would sneak up behind you with a shank if they were given enough money.

Are you fucking insane? You know what all whites thought back then? Lincoln was all over the place on slavery and abolishing it, party being a politician from Illinois. He said on multiple occasions all men should be free and be able to improve their lot in life. His main concern was what do you do with all of these free blacks, can they make it on their own down there etc. One reason he proposed sending free southern blacks to Liberia or somewhere else in the Americas.

Maybe the really zealous ones. But I would think most Northerners still opposed slavery, given that every Northern state had abolished it and many were quite eager to keep it from spreading. It was a very contentious issue between the North and the South. And if the North had been merely indifferent to it, I don't think that would have been the case.

Most Northerners had no opinion on slavery.. EXCEPT for rich bankers who saw the Southern economy as competition, so under the false guise of abolition, created another political party.
Either way, they weren't fighting to end slavery, they were fighting to preserve the Union.

The latter part I fully agree with. And although I'm a descendant of Union soldiers and have roots in one of the most pro-Union areas of the country, I think the Union win was something of a Pyrrhic victory. States' rights and Americans' right of self-determination were done serious damage. I believe states have the right to secede, and the North should have respected that right.
