With demographic decline being the overarching issue across Europe, Hungary seems to be bucking the trend. The fertility rate amongst married women has risen significantly in the past few years, defying commentators who have claimed it was impossible.
Hungarian women are more likely to get married than their Western European counterparts, significantly also marrying at a younger age to increase the chance of fertility.
Government policies, such as tax deductions for families with children and subsidies for families buying houses, have clearly encouraged family growth, but it is seen that the “pro-family culture” dominating Hungary currently is the bigger factor.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made it clear that the problem of declining populations will only be remedied by larger families and rising fertility rates, dismissing mass immigration as an alternative.
With Orban claiming that liberal democracies have failed “to strengthen families”, he has pledged to ensure Hungary “is able to sustain its own population level”.
