Poor people are fatter than richer people - and THIS is the reason
POOR people are fatter than rich people, according to a decades-long study.
Worse-off children born after World War Two were thinner and shorter because of rationing and a diet of fruit and veg.
But the increasing price of healthy foods in modern Britain has reversed the weight shift, so poor people are now more tubby due to a diet of unhealthy, cheaper foods.
The new study analysed people born in 1946, 1958, 1970 and 2001 for their body mass index, height and weight.
Lead author Dr David Bann, of University College London's Institute of Education, said: "Considerable changes took place, including changes to several factors that might have influenced diet and physical activity.
"Diets are likely to contribute to BMI and height inequalities, and British diets have changed considerably.
"World War Tworelated food rationing continued up to 1954 in the UK. Compared with population diet in the 1990s, rationingbased diets were characterised by higher consumption of vegetables, lower consumption of sugar and soft drinks, and higher consumption of fat as a proportion of energy intake."
The study published in The Lancet Public Health journal looked at 22,500 children at the age of seven, 34,873 at 11, and 26,128 at 15 in the four categories.
Their class was analysed by their father's occupation and in all groups the most disadvantaged children were shorter than others.
Dr Bann is leading calls for policies to reduce levels of childhood obesity.
He added: "Without interventions, childhood BMI inequalities are likely to widen further during adulthood, leading to adverse health and economic consequences.
"Action is needed, such as creating incentives for food makers to reduce sugar and fat content in food and drinks and reducing advertising of unhealthy foods."
