Do websites listen to you?

An odd thing has been occurring lately: After having a conversation with someone in the room, sites like Amazon and Ebay will start to suggest items or subjects that had been discussed.

Is it my imagination? Or is technology really getting that nefarious?

I can't remember what the thing was, but it struck me as weird because I had not searched for it. We were talking about this item and then it showed up on Amazon under suggested items. It's happened a couple of times to both me and my husband, specifically Amazon. I've not given it permission to use microphone.
