Putin is neither the saviour of Russia nor is he the new hitler, what western media tries to tell us. He is just an oligarch and statesman, who want to stay in power as long as possible. He has not really any ideology and is using soviet and czarist nostalgia just to get sympathy from the older generations. Also he is neither nationalist nor liberal. His children live in the west and most of the Russian politicians send their children to the west and spend their money also here. So he and most other Russian politicians are not really anti-western. Anti-western rhetorics are just for the domestic audience.

I agree up to the point where you say he isn't a nationalist. Has there ever been a nationalist who has taken power that didn't use their position to their advantage? I can't think of one. What is there for the taking will be taken. That doesn't necessarily mean they will sell out their country. What it means is they will take advantage of their position. Putin is a very wealthy individual by plundering big businessmen who didn't want to play ball with him but that doesn't mean he will place other nation's interests ahead of his own for the sake of profit. What is more important than wealth to many men in power is legacy. How do they want to be remembered by their people and so while he has stolen an incredibly large amount of money from his enemies for his own personal gain they are actions that can be rationalized as 'good for Russia' with a spin hat draws them away from their own personal gain.
In other words actions that can be rationalized to the public that happen to also benefit the leader doesn't damage or may even add to their legacy. Actions that can't be rationalized to benefit the nation would hurt the legacy that the leader would like to leave behind. So they make out like a bandit if they can but not to the point where it will clearly ruin what legacy they would like to leave behind.
As for Russian politicians sending their children to study in universities abroad I don't know how common that is but a parent can't be blamed for wanting the best for their child and the reality is Western universities is where anyone with money would want to send their children. The public educational system in most Western countries sucks but the elite universities are outstanding.

So, it seems America and Russia are the biggest current "brothers enemies" on earth. Different on the outside, not so different on the inside. And everyone is deploring the substantial loss in "blood and soil", but modern societies are more fueled by ideologies, and those have no race and no boundary... hence all the interventionism and marginalisation of identitary groups.

There is nothing wrong about sending your children to Western universities, but Russian politicians have double standards. They tell ordinary Russians not to travel, work or study in the West because this is unpatriotic and because the west is so "decadent" but themselves spend their holidays not in Crimea or Sotchi but in France or Spain. Many Russia are annoyed by that..
Many people romanticize Putin. And this is true about both his fans and enemies. He didnt saved Russia and just became president in the right time when the economy recoverd and oil prices skyrocket. Some of his laws in the early 2000s definetly helped to stabilize the economy but they were mostly the work of the finance minister. And after the early 2000s he didnt really did much to modernize and stabilize the economy.
But another president no matter liberal, nationalist or communist would not really change much as long as the society does not change. Corruption is everywhere and already at work, at schools/universities and in everyday life.

Something tells me in America the same was happening : the govt. would dissuade the people, in a more subversive way, not to pay any visit to all those "undemocratic" countries, while the richest can go wherever they please ; the most curious would have gotten their chances with the Internet.
