I love classic portraiture. Here's a self-portrait done by my 7 x Gfather, Nicholas Lanier

Really nice painting, its so cool that your ancestor painted that. Gives you a bit more connection to it.

    La Vergine delle Rocce

Here i love the unusal setting, Always reminded of the sea cave (skull rock) of Peter pan

    The Birth of Venus

Although certainly stylized for modern standards this looks like it could have been Painted Yesterday and it's ready for some modern exposition.

    also Venus is really beautiful

    Judith behading Holofernes

I'm basically in love with Judith here (shame that this painting has been used by some feminist but whatever)
this painting really looks ahead of it's time, it's almost like a photo

Ivan the Terrible and his son on November 16 1561

This is just one of my favorite, you can really see the desperation of a madman behind those eyes.

Bal du mulin de la Garrette

this painting is probably the closest thing you can get to a motion picture film with only one image. you can see them talking , dancing, smiling listening all in one frame.

    Les femmes d'Alger

    synchretism at it's best

    La Citt che sale

The chaos of a growing city in the first years of the 1900's.

    never
