Yup prolly because of them, Byzantines had to pull out of eastern Anatolia/Levant and let the Moslems take more land from the east.

In scholarly environments, the Oghurness of the Bulgars of old isn't discussed anymore. They were undoubtedly a Turkic people.
The Bulgarian state is spreading these misinformation because they are supposedly not OK with the idea 'their ancestors, were Turkic.

Modern Bulgarians are a Slavic nation and not anything in common with the Ancient Bulgars. That's a nuisance that a Slavic nation revises history in a shameless way.

English word Burglar really came from Bulgar. After Slavicization and spread of Bugomil sect, Danube Bulgaria acquired negative image in West, Anglos adopted that word as result.

Ancient Bulgars were Turkics of Oghur branch.

When they leave Volga-Ural area, they moved to Tuna area(North Balkan). Then they converted to Christianity and mixed with Slavs and Thracians.

Now, today's Bulgarians have little or nothing to do with ancient Bulgars except the name. They're mainly Slavic and Thracians with some Vlach and minor Turkic ancestry
