If you aren't used to it then yes it can. Cycling, even on a stationary bike is easy on the knees.

I find it easier walking on smooth terrain than in rougher uneven terrain and wooded areas (although I prefer the challenge of rough terrain and I love walking around trees and nature, except for the hidden slippery areas.)

I've noticed that many pavements in London are full of uneven and sloping surfaces which causes peoples feet to have to walk in an awkward foot position that hurts my ankles sometimes when the pavement straight ahead is sloped and an uneven angle. (Like the feeling a person would have if they tried to walk sideways uphill.)

Also I've seen lots of dangerous slabs of stone laid into the pavements with uneven and rough edges that people can easily trip over.

There's a residential street that I walk through sometimes when I cross over boroughs and walk into the London Borough of Brent - and one of the slabs of stone in the pavement is so loose and wobbly that it sinks down about 15cm from the ground level if you step onto it, which makes your heart skip a beat.. as it feels like it's going to collapse. I feel like complaining about it to their local council as it's a safety hazard for people with pets, pushchairs, wheelchairs, shopping trollies, etc.

I walk up some steep areas too each day when I'm at work... but it's good exercise which I enjoy.

If I get pain, I use ibuprofen gel and pills as advised by a pharmacist I spoke to, salt baths, protective gel 'socks', and I have an emergency pain remedy box with special knee brace supports and ankle supports I researched and found online and bought incase I ever have a sprain.

I also have good shock absorbtion in the bottom soles of my walking trainers and they're breathable and waterproof.

If you're not used to it then you need to do it each day and the pain will reduce over time - and your stamina and endurance levels will increase.

You've probably heard this mentioned in gyms: 'No Pain, No Gain.'

Question to OP: What is your height in feet and inches?

What is your weight in stones and pounds?

(Like many UK people, I don't know what human weight means in kilos or human height in cm's.... if someone said to me they weigh 50 kilos, I'd be clueless what that means and wouldn't know if that's light or heavy for a human, and would need to look at a conversion table to convert it into stones and pounds.... but I'd instantly know it would be in a healthy weight range if a person said they were 5'6" and 8 stone 4lbs, for example.)

There was anger in the UK when the EU legally forced metric measurements onto the UK. Market stall owners complained their customers were confused what 2 kilos of apples means. So they'd write the measurements in both metric and imperial.

Many people here still like the traditional imperial system.... so we use a mixture of both metric and imperial systems. My grandparents always used imperial.... farenheit, yards, inches, feet, hectares, acres, miles, pounds, stones, ounces, pints, tablespoons, etc.... but I learned the temperature as celsius at school and was taught a mixture of imperial and metric.

After Brexit, UK market-stall owners and shops wants to ditch the use of EU-imposed metric measurements for the Łprice of the weight measurements of fruits and vegetables, etc, that are displayed to customers on signs... and just stick to the traditional imperial system. Same way we're not going to change to driving on the left side of the vehicle and the right side of the road, and we're not going to give-up on preserving some of our countryside traditional steam trains. Nigel Farage wants a few more traditional steam trains launched our island after Brexit.

Just rest it for a day and then keep up the exercise. Totally normal when you're starting out. 5 miles is a long way. And use shoes with good arch support.
