    Default "They Were Expendable" (1945)

Directed by John Ford, this film is based on the true story of Lieutenant (later Vice Admiral) John Bulkeley, who commanded a squadron of PT boats in the Philippines at the beginning of World War II. The corresponding character in the movie is Lieutenant John Brickley, played by Robert Montgomery.

During this time, Bulkeley so excelled in his duty that he was awarded the Medal of Honor. The citation states that Bulkeley's medal was awarded

For extraordinary heroism, distinguished service, and conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty as commander of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3, in Philippine waters during the period 7 December 1941 to 10 April 1942. The remarkable achievement of LCDR Bulkeley's command in damaging or destroying a notable number of Japanese enemy planes, surface combatant and merchant ships, and in dispersing landing parties and land-based enemy forces during the 4 months and 8 days of operation without benefit of repairs, overhaul, or maintenance facilities for his squadron, is believed to be without precedent in this type of warfare. His dynamic forcefulness and daring in offensive action, his brilliantly planned and skillfully executed attacks, supplemented by a unique resourcefulness and ingenuity, characterize him as an outstanding leader of men and a gallant and intrepid seaman. These qualities coupled with a complete disregard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon him and the Naval Service.
Below is a YouTube video that combines clips from the film with the opening theme from Tour of Duty, a late-80's TV series about the Vietnam War. In effect, the video is a new set of opening credits for the movie. The somber tone of the theme music accurately reflects the reality of the situation in the Philippines during the early days of the war.

For a German a deeply moving (anti-)war movie, my absolute favourite.

    Default "Wake Island" (1942)

Actor Brian Donlevy, who played the Marine commander in the film. Image posted at andthenomineesare.blogspot.com

The screenplay is based on the actual Battle of Wake Island (8-23 December 1941). Consisting mostly of Marines, a small military garrison of 522 men was stationed there beginning in August 1941. The garrison was attacked on the same day as Pearl Harbor, it withstood repeated air raids, and it even repulsed the initial invasion attempt of 11 December. To the best of my knowledge, this remains the only attempted beach landing that was turned back by aircraft and shore batteries. One battery sank the Japanese destroyer Hayate, which was the first major Japanese surface ship to be lost in World War II.

There were also over 1,000 civilian construction workers, and a significant number of them volunteered to fight in the battle against the second and final invasion. The defenders were finally overwhelmed by superior numbers on 23 December.

The film went into production while the battle was still in progress; it was released in August 1942, only days after the initial landing on Guadalcanal. It became a stirring patriotic film at a time when the American public sorely needed a lift for its' morale. Since the beginning of the Pacific War, the Battle of Midway had been its only major success, victory at Guadalcanal would not be earned until early 1943, and the war did not end until August 1945.

Although the film does not stick to all of the facts, it should be remembered that the full story of the battle was not known until after the end of the war.

Some of my favorites (not in any particular order):

Inglourious Basterds (Love the entire movie, but worth a viewing just to see Christoph Waltz's incredible portrayal of the character SS-Standartenführer Hans Landa)
The Thin Red Line (Love it or hate it. I loved it. Although it did not win, it received many Academy Award nominations.)
Der Untergang/Downfall (Bruno Ganz was amazing!)
Band of Brothers (HBO mini) (Hands down the most incredible mini of the last many years, in my opinion)
    The Pacific (HBO mini)
Das Boot (my all time favorite)
    Europa Europa
    Patton
    Saving Private Ryan
    Casablanca
    Lawrence of Arabia
    Schindler's List
Last of the Mohicans (Seven Years' War - French and Indian War)
    Conspiracy
    Valkyrie
    Stalingrad
    A Midnight Clear
    The Pianist
    Flags of Our Fathers
    Letters from Iwo Jima
Fatherland (HBO special - alternative history post WW2 thriller)

I have not listed many of the foreign (outside US) and older films I would also definitely recommend. Will try and get to them at some other time.

I always thought platoon was quite good. Its quite rare to see a war film that conveys actually how it is,and platoon comes close in some scenes..(everyone asleep on ambush ).
It did quite well in potraying the sense of lawlessness that soldiers can experience, and being accountable to nobody except themselves.Walking down the road with fifteen heavily armed friends knowing that nobody will fuck around with you...and if they do will pay a dear price can never really be put on film although you can see Oliver Stone experienced it himself.(and i imagine feels the same nostalgia).

Sometimes i would give anything to go back and feel the "buzz" again.
