On my way up the mountain this morning I heard this song and thought about this thread..

America gets a bad rap for a bunch of stuff. Everyone knows here that there is a problem with the "representation". It's a lot different than it used to be and Constitutionally was supposed to be. Those of us who founded and subsequently tried to secede from this nation are still here. My name is on that Declaration of Independence and some more of mine fought in that War between the States. That pioneering spirit is in many ways unique to us and lives on to this day..

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where as least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A
Later,
-Lyfing

Default National anthem of Denmark and the royal anthem of Denmark

Der er et yndigt land
There is a lovely land

Danish lyrics
Der er et yndigt land,
det stĺr med brede břge
nćr salten řsterstrand :|
Det bugter sig i bakke, dal,
det hedder gamle Danmark
og det er Frejas sal :|

Der sad i fordums tid
de harniskklćdte kćmper,
udhvilede fra strid :|
Sĺ drog de frem til fjenders mén,
nu hvile deres bene
bag hřjens bautasten :|

Det land endnu er skřnt,
thi blĺ sig sřen bćlter,
og lřvet stĺr sĺ grřnt :|
Og ćdle kvinder, skřnne mř'r
og mćnd og raske svende
bebo de danskes řer :|

Hil drot og fćdreland!
Hil hver en danneborger,
som virker, hvad han kan! :|
Vort gamle Danmark skal bestĺ,
sĺ lćnge břgen spejler
sin top i břlgen blĺ :|

Free metrical translation
There is a lovely land
with spreading, shady beeches
Near salty Baltic strand :|
Its hills and valleys gently fall,
its ancient name is Denmark,
And it is Freya's hall :|

There in the ancient days
the armoured Vikings rested
Between their bloody frays :|
Then they went forth the foe to face,
now found in stone-set barrows,
Their final resting place :|

This land is still as fair,
the sea is blue around it,
And peace is cherished there :|
Strong men and noble women still
uphold their country's honour
With faithfulness and skill :|

Literal translation
There is a lovely country
it stands with broad beeches
near the salty eastern beach
It winds itself in hill, valley,
it is called old Denmark
and it is Freja's hall

There sat in former times,
the armour-suited warriors,
rested from conflict
Then they journeyed forwards to their enemies' injury,
now their bones are resting
behind the mound's menhir

That country is still lovely,
because the sea waves so blue frolic,
and the foliage stands so green
And noble women, beautiful maidens,
and men and brisk swains
inhabit the Danes' islands

Hail king and native country!
Hail every a Dane-citizen,
who works, what he can
Our old Denmark shall endure,
as long the beech reflects
its top in the blue wave

Kong Kristian stod ved hřjen mast
King Christian stood by the lofty mast

English translation by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

1
King Christian stood by the lofty mast
In mist and smoke;
His sword was hammering so fast,
Through Gothic helm and brain it passed;
Then sank each hostile hulk and mast,
In mist and smoke.
"Fly!" shouted they, "fly, he who can!
Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
Who braves of Denmark's Christian,
In battle?"

2
Niels Juel gave heed to the tempest's roar,
Now is the hour!
He hoisted his blood-red flag once more,
And smote upon the foe full sore,
And shouted loud, through the tempest's roar,
"Now is the hour!"
"Fly!" shouted they, "for shelter fly!
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
Of Denmark's Juel who can defy,
The power?"

3
North Sea! a glimpse of Wessel rent
Thy murky sky!
Then champions to thine arms were sent;
Terror and Death glared where he went;
From the waves was heard a wail, that rent
Thy murky sky!
From Denmark thunders Tordenskiol',
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
Let each to Heaven commend his soul,
And fly!

4
Path of the Dane to fame and might!
Dark-rolling wave!
Receive thy friend, who, scorning flight,
Goes to meet danger with despite,
Proudly as thou the tempest's might,
Dark-rolling wave!
And amid pleasures and alarms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
And war and victory, be thine arms,
My grave!

Danish lyrics

1
Kong Christian stod ved hřjen mast
i rřg og damp;
hans vćrge hamrede sĺ fast,
at gotens hjelm og hjerne brast.
Da sank hvert fjendtligt spejl og mast
i rřg og damp.
Fly, skreg de, fly, hvad flygte kan!
hvo stĺr for Danmarks Christian
hvo stĺr for Danmarks Christian
i kamp?

2
Niels Juel gav agt pĺ stormens brag.
i strid?

3
O, Nordhav! Glimt af Wessel brřd
din mřrke sky.
Da ty'de kćmper til dit skřd;
thi med ham lynte skrćk og dřd.
Fra valen hřrtes vrĺl, som brřd
den tykke sky.
Fra Danmark lyner Tordenskjold;
hver give sig i himlens vold
hver give sig i himlens vold
og fly!

4
Du danskes vej til ros og magt,
sortladne hav!
Modtag din ven, som uforsagt
třr mřde faren med foragt
sĺ stolt som du mod stormens magt,
sortladne hav!
Og rask igennem larm og spil
og kamp og sejer fřr mig til
og kamp og sejer fřr mig til
min grav!

The British national anthem is easily the worst in the world, (although officially we don’t have one).

I quite like I vow to thee my country:

We could just have the whole of the Jupiter suite:

I believe that legends and myth are largely made of
“truth”, and indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode; and long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered and must always reappear.

J.R.R. Tolkien

Indeed it might be a basic characteristic of existence that those who would know it completely would perish, in which case the strength of a spirit should be measured according to how much of the “truth” one could still barely endure-or to put it more clearly, to what degree one would require it to be thinned down, shrouded, sweetened, blunted, falsified.
Nietzsche

To God everything is beautiful, good, and just; humans, however, think some things are unjust and others just.

[Disclaimer: the Finlandia Hymn is not officially Finland's national anthem (it is actually the same tune posted by Karl previously in this thread, with different words), but I think it ought to be.]

Tsk-tsk, Eldritch. The national anthem of Finland is Maamme, not Finlandia. And it is Maamme that has the same melody as the national anthem of Estonia.

I do agree with you, though, that Finlandia would make a more impressive national anthem (not the Miku Hatsune version, though).

Yep, but notice that I did say the Finlandia Hymn ought to be the national anthem.

)And I guess I should have worded it a little more clearly that it is indeed the official anthem that has the same melody as the Estonian one. Although the Estonian one is a little shorter, which is why they often play it instead when some Finnish athlete wins a medal -- which of course always has sports reporters fuming.)

Here's a little more dignified version:

Yes, I think you should have worded it more clearly, because we don't have an official national anthem. Maamme is the established national anthem.

I was just confused as to why you would post something else than the national anthem in a thread that is about national anthems.

Bro Gozh ma Zadoů (Breton for Old Land of My Fathers) is the national anthem of Brittany. It is sung to the same tune as that of the national anthem of Wales, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, and has similar words. The Cornish anthem, Bro Goth Agan Tasow, is also sung to the same tune.
