The Habar Awal Sultanate came under the British Protectorate by signing a treaty with the British Empire on 14 July 1884. The Habar Awal clan continued a lucrative trading agreement with the British Empire and thus the British colonials established the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate at Berbera.
