A culturally and socially significant 1860 novel by Multatuli (the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker) which was to play a key role in shaping and modifying Dutch colonial policy in the Dutch East Indies in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The practices that were attacked in the book were part of the so-called Cultivation System. The final institutional abuses would have been cleared away in 1931 when the Penal Sanction was abolished but by then a humanitarian form of colonial rule (known as the Ethical Policy) was already well underway.
