Was Achilles really blonde ?

I heard about the claim that Achilles was actually brown haired , not blonde haired . This mostly comes from the fact they called his hair ξανθóς (ksanthos) which was used in other occaisons to mean brown (a verb that has its root from this word meant "to roast" and we know roasting makes the meat brown not blonde) . Also when the gaulish children were described as "blonde" by Diodorus , they used πολιóς (polios) .

As far as I know there is no proof Achilles was a historical figure and not simply a great legendary or fictional one. He was written to be blond in the Iliad.

Well I am speaking about the fictional Achilles and his description in the Illiad .

I’m not sure then. I know he’s interpreted as blond and there’s even references to him as having red hair too.
