Folks, even northern Greece is not proper southern Europe (like Sicily, Crete etc).

At least going by traditions. They’re very similar to Bulgarians and Slavic Macedonians.

As people have already suggested, it depends which Balkanite you are talking about. Macedonians for example are closer to modern Greeks. Heck, many of us even originate, or at least have some ancestry from today's northern greece.

Also you can in no way say southern Serbs, Montenegrins, Bulgarians and Albanians are closer to central Europeans then they are to southern Europeans.

Even if that's so, we are still closer to Cretans then to central Europeans.

You are very similar to northern Greeks. But genetics will help us determine whether you are closer to Cretans than to Central Euros.

The Slavic input in Slavic Macedonians will probably lean you towards Central Euros. But this is just speculation from my side.

I'm going off the formal samples. Perhaps Vojvodina is different, and I'm not sure who the "Bosnian" samples are but I assume they tested ethnic Bosniaks.

Indeed. Not only is Greece Southern European, but close to West Asia already. But i don't think you have something in common with Hungary only due to Communist past. Hungary is just geographically pretty close to some Balkan countries.

So then are you ok with saying Northern Greeks are closer to Central Europeans?

The Talmud tells us that the only language the Torah could be translated into elegantly is Greek.

    Close by which definition?

Anatolian Greeks (Greeks from Turkey) make around 30% of Greece’s population. They are similar to Turks, Armenians etc. But other Greeks are not close to West Asia.

For example we Cretans are close only to Sephardic Jews. That’s the only Middle Eastern population that we cluster with. And Sephardic Jews are significantly southern European.
