Turkey's Erdogan calls for a boycott of iPhones in fiery TV speech as he hits back against US sanctions causing the lira to plunge to record lows
'If (the United States) have the iPhone, there's Samsung on the other side,' he said, referring to US giant Apple's iconic phone and the top South Korean brand.
'We (also) have our Venus and Vestel,' he said about homegrown Turkish electronics brands.
Turkish Airlines also announced on Twitter that it would join a campaign circulating on social media with a hashtag #ABDyeReklamVerme (don't give ads to America).
Erdogan admitted the Turkish economy had problems -- including a widening current account deficit and inflation of almost 16 percent but added: 'Thanks to God, our economy is functioning like clockwork.'

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said on Tuesday that US sanctions against Ankara and Moscow were an illegitimate policy and a way for the US to obtain an unfair competitive advantage in global trade. Lavrov was speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, in Ankara.
Çavuşoğlu condemned the sanctions, saying the US had to end its “impositions” if it wanted to remain a reputable country. “The era of bullying must end,” he said.
