    Depends on the context.
Paternal line is more important when science wants to verify migration and population movements.

Not sure of a perfect answer to this, but I have a common German surname and am thus associated as “very German” by people I meet. Going by deep maternal, I’m Polish. I think I “identify” with the latter in a way, but I also have a lot of respect for my paternal grandfather. I dig all sides.

Both I determine as equally valid, as in the end i look at dozens of individuals, each one equalling 2 or 3% of my "total" (yes, i am aware that i will not receive dna and features at a simply 50/50% rate from ancestors but...). however of course i am interested in name lines that continue, particularly because i have an extremely rare last name.

It's a funny thing, that last name does make who you are so the longest paternal line (up to your father) is in a way the most important. i also have a name that has generated the same phenomenon and have literally had teachers in school attempt to speak german to me out of the blue, at a time when i didn't know almost any.

Men are extensions of their forefathers not their foremothers.
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

    +1

And not only ''not only come to into existence without both'' ... but both have influenced what kind of person you have grown up/become (personality, identity, morals, values).

Or that's how it should be in family.
