Actually comes from the theory of making background music popular and meaningful like Phsycadelic,trip-hop, lofi music. It's meant to be easy listening.

I thought the term vaporwave came from the term vaporware, which refers to "a product, typically computer hardware or software, that is announced to the general public but is late or never actually manufactured nor officially cancelled".

Vaporwave was invented by Vektroid, whose projects used to have an esthetic that incorporated elements of 90s and 80s computer technology. For example his aliases were called Macintosh Plus, Laserdisc Visions, and 情報デスクVIRTUAL (Information Desk VIRTUAL). (He calls himself a girl, but I don't believe it.)

Chillwave was a precursor of vaporwave, and Carles of Hipster Runoff had coined the term chillwave in 2009 before vaporwave emerged in 2011-2012.
