For original research I highly recommend Simple Family Tree. It's a free and very simplistic software that I've been using for almost a decade. My tree in SFT exceeds three thousand individuals. I've tried just about any other offline and online family tree maker and I always end up going back to this simple gem.
For a more fancy and presentable offline option, I would recommend AgeLong Tree 5. Another option is Gramps, which is by far the most intricate software out there. The aspect I liked the most about it is the ability to attach a source to virtually any line of data, but it can feel clumsy at times.
All three software allow you to extract a GEDCOM file that can be uploaded to any online service (Ancestry, Geni, MyHeritage, WikiTree, RootsMagic etc). I don't like online services since they hoard your data, but Ancestry would be my first choice.
    Spoiler!
