It couldnt work, because some people were anticommunist, others were pro communist, others wanted reform,
before Warsaw Pact was created...
the emergence of new countries including conflicts (post WWI),
the Bolshevik revolution (and divisions within Russia itself)
invasion of East Europe (WW2)
by the time the Pact was created
much of the above had happened, tens of millions lives lost, communism had an iron fist.
Ukrainians would remember Holodomar
Russians their clashes with Nazi Germany nationalism and their own loses from Stalin.
The Bloc members outside USSR overtime were neglected or invaded.

officially it was about communist ideology but it wasnt 100% marxist. it was with slavic nationalist undertones and such. just like china isnt really a marxist country. chinese are also nationalist and xenophobic in china you cant be citizen if you arent a han chinese or east asian.

Russia wanted to hold power in Central Europe but were ultimately driven-out, since Europeans sided with US-Anglican culture more than Slavic. Most Europeans are weary and less trusting of Moscow than Washington D.C.
Plus US has more money and promise for a better future (Capitalism).
