Virginia has rather mild winters compared to the Northeast, but colder and more snowy than the Deep South. Our coldest months are January and February when we have an average (in Richmond) of about 45 degrees Farenheight. It almost never goes below zero though. In Richmond some winters are so mild, we have no snow and the temps stay above freezing. Every 5-10 years we get a significant snowfall ( about 1 ft or more at once). When it snows here, (even a dusting) schools are closed and people panic.
