Didn't it come initially from Iran? I know that has been debated.

Since basal clades exist in North Caucasus and Volga region, it could have been there from start but was less sucessful compared to west Slavic countries where it went trough bottleneck.

I don't believe that it comes from Iran. At least not from modern day Iran.

    In several different ways probably.

I mean for example most of Ukraine was devastated by the Mongols in the 1200s and these areas remained sparsely populated until 1500. The Mongols utterly destroyed Kiev, which was one of the largest cities in Europe back in 1230 (it was comparable in size and population to the largest cities in North Italy). Tatars & Mongols continued to raid and to depopulate entire Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones of Ukraine.

One Ruthenian duchy that survived relatively untouched, was Halych-Volhynia in West Ukraine. Poland, Hungary and Lithunia started expanding into Ukraine in the 1300s and partitioned the Principality of Galich-Volhynia (Poland took Galich - with the city of Lviv - and later also Podolia, Lithuania took Volhynia). Lithuanians later annexed Kiev (at that time a small town - it never fully recovered after the Mongols).

In the 1500s-1600s there was a significant movement of people from West Ukraine and Poland to Central Ukraine.

At the same time, settlers from Russia and Central Ukraine moved to Sloboda Ukraine (North-Eastern Ukraine):
