Default Should Puerto Rico become independent from the United States?

I see that many Americans do not consider Puerto Rico as United States and many Puerto Ricans do not consider themselves American, so Puerto Rico should leave the US?

It wouldn't really benefit us in any way and would just screw up the political balance even more if it became a state, so it might as well be independent

No, Puerto Rico benefits from being part of the US and if it were to be it's own country, it would be bad for them financially.

Remaining a territory is the best course. Puerto Ricans did take a non binding vote recently and I believe 97% voted yes to become a state.
They are swimming in massive amounts of debt.

You might want to add a 3rd option, "remain a Territory".

Yes, since Puerto Ricans never voted to be part of USA.

Plus under statehood, puerto rico would be able to file for chapter 9 and receive more federal funding then it can now under its current legal status.

Puerto Rico benefits so much more from the US than the US from Puerto Rico. That is economically, free movement, strategic and military support, as well being assisted in natural disasters like the the devastating Hurricane of last year. No country of that size would easily recover from that disaster, but because of the USA, it is almost fully recuperated.
