SHORT ANSWER: "Belgified Germans"

LONG ANSWER: the most intricate ethnicity on Earth. Part of my family is from there, I could tell a lot about it but it would take weeks to explain.

Let me summarize.
In the beginning there was a mediaeval duchy whose Western half was French-speaking whilst the East was German-speaking.
In 1831, at the time Belgium went independent, the country was split in two halves, the West becoming the Belgian Province of Luxembourg, the East became an autonomous Grand-Duchy. Some French-speaking villages ended up in the Grand-Duchy, but the predominantly German town of Arlon/Arlen was given to Belgium (and soon became thoroughly Frenchified).

Both halves remembered that they had been part of a bi-cultural compoud though!

Now, in modern Luxembourg everybody is supposed to be perfectly fluent in German and French, but in real life they all speak an obscure Germanic dialect full of French words.

And since main local industry is the banking sector, which seduces lots of rich Dutchmen who are willing to enjoy the safety provided by the tricky Luxembourger banks, speaking Dutch is a plus! (In addition to English, notcherly).

Add to this that the wealthy Grand-Duchy has attracted crowds of Southern European migrants. A significant part of the population uses Portuguese or Italian at home.

Consequently, being proficient in 5 or 6 languages is just NORMAL in Luxembourg.

People who read French dailies and German weekly magazines, who listen to French radios and watch German TVs: this is Luxembourg. Criminal law is French, commercial law is German...

Popular architecture looks like a midterm between France and Germany (French Alsace looks much more definitely Germanic).

Way of life, mindset: absolutely Belgian / Walloon.
