Does FTDNA really go back 5000 years, as advertised?

Probably, if you take the ancientOrigins calculator into account, while myOrigins has to be relatively recent (a few centuries).

    Nope, just commercial marketing shit.

So more than any other company? If so, FTDNA is probably the best for balkan people, for detecting paleo-balkanic, slavic, and all ancestry.

Not sure how good there chip actually is though.

This may be true, but I've seen Albos on FTDNA specifically score like 5-20% East Euro, and don't seem to score it on other testing companies like 23andme, etc..

Most from what i've seen score 100% SE Europe on FTDNA, I've seen a few score minor EE but they often have some montenegrin ancestors or suming. Serbs score closer to 50/50 which is accurate, though some are more SE shifted some EE shifted.

I'm not so sure about that. I would have to agree with Tschaikisten with it being commercial garbage. The ancient populations is only divided into four categories: Metal Age Invader, Farmer, Hunter-Gatherer and non-European, so it doesn't really say anything of any substance.

Check thread on Anthrogenica about it, you'll find how it's crap.

It's taking into accout Steppe, whg, EEF etc. which all Euro polupations have in varying percentages. Peterski summed it up pretty well.

So yeah, it is very useful.

The only problem is that so far we have no any good-quality samples of ancient Thracian DNA and ancient Proto-Slavic DNA.

But of course these will be just guesses, as long as we have no relevant ancient DNA samples.
