Interesting. Is it also true that in Greek weedings, people throw dishes on the ground and the number of pieces that the dishes turn into means the number of years the marriage will last?

Well a normal Greek family doesn't smash plates at weddings. You are more likely to see this custom among Greeks in Australia than in Greece. At least my generation isn’t familiar with plate smashing (I never witnessed it) so I can’t really tell. I think it was more a thing of the 60s, a practise made famous by Onassis. Ancient Greeks also smashed ceramic pots for different occassions. Sometimes as an expression of joy othertimes as a way to let off steam..much like the quitarists smash their quitars. lol. In Corfu it is common to throw huge clay pots filled with red ribbons from their windows, at Easter. I guess we like to break things.
