There were so many Christians in Smyrna before the ethnic cleansing in the 20s - the Turks themselves called the city Gavur İzmir - Infidel City. The Turks are doing the right thing to hide that any way they can - the bigger the Mosque to Prophet the better.

I disagree however when you say Islam is not a unifier. It is the largest unifier on earth and with a religion of conquest - like all the desert religions are (Chrismusjews) - unity is key. The fact that it is not a unifier was understood in WW1 when Arabs rebelled against Turks and massacred many Turkish soldiers allying with the British.

Around half of Turks strongly reject the Islamic Ottoman agenda of the government.

Skanderberg became popular and re-intoduced in 20th century when Albania became independent, since they nedeed a national hero to sleep tight in nights. I doubt any Albanian knew his name before that. Don't make it sound like as if Albanians were the arch nemesis of Turks or something.

People who Skanderberg fought off in his rightful stand against Ottoman tyranny were NOT Turks. Just check out names.
You have people like Isa Evrenos. Evrenos is Greek name and Isa means Jesus in Arabic, very common among converts back then.
People being fracticides were not supposed to show mercy to Albanians after all.

When Albanians were fighting the Ottomans, so were doing Turks in Anatolia. In the end, the tyranny won by posing Turk. Yet many Turks resisted and some even converted to Shia to side with Safavids after Ottomans destroyed their beyliks in Anatolia.

The empire was Turkified centuries later during 19th century.
