$375,000 is nothing compared to what could be lost from the bad press that comes from being accused of rape and once you go to trial for a crime in many people's minds you might as well have already been convicted.

You also never know with a jury. The dude who was in Walking Dead (the friend who turned on Rick Grimes) knocked a guy out and put him in the hospital. The guy pushed him from behind looking for a fight and he turned around and knocked him out. The witnesses said the other guy got physical first while the actor dude was trying to walk away. Anyway, the actor got sued and they settled out of court. The actor dude was certainly in the right but all that civil court shit takes time and who knows for sure what a jury will decide. There is that 'can't be 100% sure how it will end' uncertainty with a jury and that could mean the difference of a few hundred thousand dollars or millions (or nothing) for him.

That could have been said about Cosby as well. Rape isn't about sex. It's about power. Lets say the accusation against Ronaldo is true. The woman said no. That would be more sexually arousing to him than all the women who say yes because now there is a power struggle. The sexual gratification comes from being able to force his will.
