The 2* Hotel Arbez boasts an almost unique feature: an international border runs straight through it. Why was it built there? How was it allowed? And how did it end up unexpectedly saving hundreds of lives during World War II? I travelled to the Jura mountains to find out more...

In this video, we look at one of Switzerland's most beautiful and unique railways, the Unesco heritage listed Berninabahn - this time in the opposite direction. The next video on this line will be with deep snow in 4K, so stay tuned. The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.

A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars. Our train today has 3 empty stake cars to the rear, which you will see in the rear view camera along the way. Due to the late afternoon, the sun is mostly behind the mountains, leaving us without direct sunlight. However, this trip will be recorded again in different conditions and in 4K60p in the future. Please note is the position of the microphone to avoid conversations being recorded - it is on the opposite cab of our multiple unit.

You will be hearing some eerie and for some people, funny creaking sounds along the way - this comes from the couplings and the buffer when push or pull forces are applied during the trip. The sounds are completely normal and exist everywhere where UIC couplings are in place. Grease and oil are not to be applied on the hook and chain. At this point, I would like to thank Paolo for making this video possible and providing a great deal of information included in the video. His channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/dellacap... Any questions concerning the trip and the line will gladly be answered by him.

A day in the life of the beautiful Swiss city of Lausanne. Expresses the atmosphere and the moods of a traditional European city, as it was. A labor of love by the producer, who lived happily with his family in Lausanne at the time the film was made. Produced in 1960.

A mosaic documentary of the culture, craftsmanship, industries, scenery and way of life of the mountainous Swiss Republic. Produced in 1971.

Switzerland has a reputation for being... not paranoid, exactly, but certainly careful with their own safety. Zurich exemplifies this: not just with its fallout shelters, but with an entire backup water system. Just in case the world ends. SOURCE (in German): https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/dib/de/i...

On the river Rhine in Switzerland, there are reaction ferries: boats with no engine, no paddles, no onboard motive power at all. Here's how they work -- and a question about what other simple ideas are out there.

Büsingen is like any other small German village. Except it's in Switzerland. Or is it the other way round? I went to discover the story behind this strange little exclave, where they buy German stamps with Swiss coins, and it all starts with a family argument in 1693...

(Filmed pre-shutdown obv). For most people, 2061m is a very high mountain. For the Swiss, it's a good place to start building a railway. And then go upwards. I went to the Alps to experience the continent's most extreme train journey, and find out more about the story behind it...
