Walking in Light Rainfall in Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt is a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking. I stayed in Zermatt for about 2 weeks enjoying the little bit of snow we got. During my last few days we got a bit of fog and it started to rain in the town. This audio consist of river sounds from the Mattervispa as well as city sounds and rain. A few birds can also be heard throughout the audio at some points. Sounds can be used for sleep, study and meditation. Enjoy!

The beautiful canton of Valais in the Swiss Alps is the setting for this closeup look at traditional farm and village life through all four seasons.

Filmed 1957-59; produced in 1970. Transfer is from a faded print.

Ernest Kleinberg (1910-1980) was born in Breslau, Germany. He grew up in Vienna, where he became a photographer for American news agencies and Life magazine. In March 1938 he was arrested by the Gestapo for photographing Hitler's march into Vienna. Released six weeks later thanks to pressure from American friends, he escaped to New York where he resumed photography and rescued his entire family from Nazi Austria. In the early 1950s he became a self-taught film producer. He subsequently completed more than 25 documentary movies.

A mosaic documentary of the culture, craftsmanship, industries, scenery and way of life of the mountainous Swiss Republic. Produced in 1971.

    Lausanne.

Expresses the atmosphere and the moods of a traditional European city, as it was. A labor of love by the producer, who lived happily with his family in Lausanne at the time the film was made. Produced in 1960.

I live in the Netherlands, where we have some pretty great trains. But there's a country in Europe that does trains better. Much better, in fact.

Switzerland has some of the best trains in the entire world - second, perhaps, only to Japan. What makes these trains so good? And what is it like to actually ride them?

François Barraud (1899-1934) was a Swiss painter.

Barraud was the second eldest of four brothers who all painted or sculpted at various points in their lives. The brothers, François, Aimé, Aurèle and Charles, were largely self-taught artists having been raised as professional plasterers and house painters. Barraud attended evening classes at the local art school in 1911 together with his brothers. In 1919, he exhibited his paintings in La Chaux-de-Fonds and participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Basel. Encouraged by the success of the exhibitions he left Switzerland in 1922, and moved to Reims in France where he worked as a house painter for two years. He married Marie, a French woman, in 1924 who subsequently featured as a model in several of his paintings. Around 1924 or 1925, Barraud found work in Paris as an artist and craftsman. While living in Paris he studied painting at the École du Louvre.

François Barraud painted mainly still lifes, female nudes and portraits, including several double portraits of himself and his wife, Marie. His precise, realist style of painting developed under the influence of the old Flemish and French masters he had studied at the Louvre.

Barraud suffered periods of illness throughout his life and died of tuberculosis in Geneva, in 1934, at the age of only 34.

François Barraud's works are held in the Musée des beaux-arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Coninx Museum in Zurich and the Foundation for Art, Culture and History in Winterthur, among other places.

Welcome to a different and somewhat special cab ride! Today we find ourselves in a SBB RABDe 500, better known as ICN. ICN is German and stands for InterCity Neigezug, intercity tilting train.

The idea behind tilting trains is to allow for faster cornering speeds than regular trains. This reduces travel time without the need to build new high-speed lines or heavily modifying existing tracks. Just compare a regular train to a car and a tilting train to a motorbike. Cornering fast in a car is possible, but wears the tires faster, is more dangerous than ordinary driving and the lateral forces are unpleasant to the passengers. On a motorbike, it is normal to lay into curves, which results in a little bit more pressure into the direction of seating, instead of lateral forces. Tilting trains are usually lighter than regular trains and the center of mass moves into the curve while tilting, reducing stress onto its own wheels and the infrastructure when compared to the same speed without tilting. But it is a fact that the higher speeds do cause more wear, even if it is reduced by the tilting motion. Everything comes at a price after all...

Our ICN takes us from Zurich to Biel, where it will be driven further to Lausanne by a colleague. It runs with a braking ratio of 180%, which is the highest of all trains in Switzerland. Most regular passenger trains run with 135 or 150%, cargo trains can be as low as 50%. The higher the number, the better a trains brakes are compared to its weight and the faster it can come to a stop. To show you the differences in speed between tilting trains and regular trains, the speeds will be displayed in the upper right corner, if applicable. If no speed is shown, tilting trains are not allowed to go faster than regular trains.

As always, sit back, enjoy and don't miss the action! The tilting motion is clearly visible at speeds above 60km/h. No worries: Most passengers are perfectly fine with the ICN! There are very few that get motion sick, since the ICNs tilting system does it's job very quick and precise, resulting in a smooth ride.
