Visiting Germany around Christmas

I've been all over the country before. But this time I'm looking for suggestions. I'd like to see smaller towns.

I heard good things about Dresden,i am not sure how accurate is this.

There is a possibility I'm visiting Germany a few days after Christmas this year. Probably for about about a week. I'll also be renting a car.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places to see?

I would only recommend that you visit Berlin and Bavaria in the rest of the country, I have no idea.
